Research IT Documentation

Research IT (previously The Trinity Centre for High Performance Computing, TCHPC) provides High Performance Computing (HPC) and other computationally intensive resources to Trinity College Dublin researchers.

HPC Clusters Research IT maintain.

Get access to HPC resources

To access any of the HPC Clusters we maintain you will require:

  1. A Research IT account. This account is separate from your Trinity College network login account you use to access email, etc.
  2. A resource allocation on each HPC Cluster. Access is not automatically granted to any of the HPC Clusters we maintain.

1. Accounts

To request a Research IT account please email ops@tchpc.tcd.ie and include the following information:

  1. Your full name and email address. We will use your Trinity College network login username.
  2. The name and email address of the Principal Investigator you are working with in Trinity.
  3. Your status in College, e.g. are you an Undergraduate or Postgraduate Student, or a member of Staff, etc.
    • If you are an Undergraduate Student we will require confirmation from your academic supervisor.
  4. If you are not a Trinity student or staff member you must fill out and return a third party access form to us before your account request can be considered. If you are not a Trinity student or staff member please also include your requested username.

2. Resource Allocations

Callan is the HPC Cluster that is generally available to all Trinity researchers. Most of the other HPC Clusters we maintain are only accessible to members of certain research groups who purchased the cluster.

Note: The Kelvin HPC Cluster will be retired on June 28th 2024. Users of Kelvin are advised to migrate to the Callan HPC Cluster.

To request a resource allocation on one of the HPC Clusters we maintain, including Callan, please email us on ops@tchpc.tcd.ie with the following information:

  1. Your Research IT username.
  2. The name of the HPC Cluster you are requesting access to.
  3. The name and email address of the Principal Investigator you are working with in Trinity.

Passwords

Research IT Account password change service. You must know your password to be able to change it from that site.

To request a password reset please email ops@tchpc.tcd.ie.

SSH Keys

Both your Research IT password and an SSH key pair are required to log into rsync.tchpc.tcd.ie from the internet. From the College network you will only need 1 of your password or SSH key pair.

Instructions

Locked out

You can add a ssh key to your rsync account as per the relevant instructions above from a computer connected to the College network, including VPN. If you are connected to the College network you do not need Research IT to add an ssh key for you.

If you cannot access the College network but need to add a ssh key to your rsync account please send your public ssh key to ops@tchpc.tcd.ie, (do not send your private key), from the @tcd.ie email address registered with your Research IT account, and we will add it for you.

Users who don't have an @tcd.ie email address and need us to add an SSH key should email ops@tchpc.tcd.ie, we will have to liaise with your collaborator in Trinity to confirm your identity.
